initially it just a sketch of Satan sitting on a chair....and it looked meh.

I then kept scaling the canvas upwards and downwards adding more and more elements which eventually became (scroll down) "the sketch" to develop.

this became the sketch, God and Christ were later additions. Initially I had stopped at the 2nd floor of the gallery.
Auguste Rodin's Adam became the base of the throne along with one of the Three Graces (Greek 2nd century)
Heavily painted over later.

Souls on the banks of the Acheron.

Utter devastation was what I was going for.

"Then looking onward I made out a throng
assembled on the beach of a wide river"

also did not like the swords. The Angel was all mighty and powerful, the very appearance caused the inhabitants near the gates of Dis to flee. So instead I went for a resplendent angel in a silhouette of a cross with a clenched fist

Phlegyas, the boatman of the Styx.

I always wanted Phleygas to be rockstar, shaggy hair, well hung mad man, because it is flares from the two towers to go up that summon him to ferry Dante and Virgil.

Dolorous Abyss, the desolate chasm.

Dante and Virgil begin their journey here after crossing the Acheron, where Dante faints and wakes up here.
